Chihuly: The Nature of Glass – an exhibition by renowned artist Dale Chihuly – opened to sell-out crowds on November 22, 2008, connecting the community and the Desert Botanical Garden like never before. Dale Chihuly is known for his grand, innovative glass sculptures and use of vibrant colors. Over the period of its six-month run, the exhibition:
- Attracted more than 550,000 visitors
- Consisted of 17 major pieces located throughout the Garden
- Featured dazzling works of art, including The Sun, which consisted of 1,200 individual pieces of glass mounted on a 550-pound armature
- Reinterpreted previously exhibited pieces by integrating them with new glass sculptures
The Desert Towers, created by Chihuly especially for Desert Botanical Garden, currently remains installed just outside of the admissions area, but your donations and support to Tower for the People can help make them a permanent part of the Garden.
Chihuly’s spectacular creations can be found in over 200 museums worldwide, and Garden exhibitions of his work have been mounted at the New York Botanical Garden, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Missouri Botanical Garden, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
